What Are My Nylons Made Of? Perlon, Helanca, Polyamide, Dederon & More

What Are Nylons Actually Made Of?

If you scroll through my shop, you'll see all kinds of stockings and tights. Some are sheer and delicate, others are soft and stretchy, some are firm and almost glassy. One of the biggest reasons for these differences is the yarn they're made of.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the most common fiber types you’ll find in my stockings. I’ll explain how they feel, what sets them apart, and why each one has its very own charm.

✨ Just a quick note up front: Over the years, many nylon manufacturers have developed their own branded yarns. While they may technically be polyamide or a blended fiber, names like "Nyltest," "Antron," or "Lycra Tactel" refer to proprietary yarns with specific features — more shine, extra stretch, or added softness. You’ll find some of these treasures in my shop, too.

Polyamide (aka Nylon) – The All-Rounder

Most modern hosiery is made from polyamide. Many people just call it "nylon" — the term that made this yarn world-famous back in the 1940s. It’s lightweight, fine, elastic and hugs the skin beautifully.

How it feels: Smooth, soft and gently stretchy.
Best for: Sheer tights, hold-ups, basic suspender stockings.

If you see "polyamide" or "nylon" listed in the shop, you can expect a silky feel and a timeless look.

Here you can purchase a video of me wearing nylons - made of nylon.

Perlon – The German Classic

Perlon was especially popular in Germany from the 1950s to the 1970s. Technically, it's a type of polyamide as well, but with its own unique feel: slightly firmer, less stretchy, and with a distinctive vintage sheen.

How it feels: Firm, crisp, almost like glass.
Best for: Vintage stockings, retro styles, backseam designs.

To me, Perlon stockings are like time capsules. Many of the vintage treasures in my shop are made from Perlon or have that unmistakable old-school vibe.

Helanca – Soft Tension, Perfect Fit

Helanca is a textured yarn — meaning it’s not smooth, but gently crimped. This creates a stretchy, soft material that hugs your legs in the loveliest way. It’s ideal for stockings that need to be comfortable while offering a bit of structure.

How it feels: Warm, soft, pleasantly stretchy.
Best for: Everyday tights, 30 DEN classics, stockings with more substance.

When I need a pair that stays comfy all day, Helanca is my go-to.

Dederon – A Yarn With History

Dederon was widely used in East Germany (GDR). It was essentially their version of Perlon, used in all kinds of garments — including stockings and tights. Today, it’s a rare find, but some authentic vintage pieces from that era still exist.

How it feels: Slightly stiffer, very durable.
Best for: Collectors, historic styles, lovers of East German vintage.

If you come across a pair made of "Dederon," you’re holding a real piece of hosiery history.

Elastane – The Stretch Factor

Technically not a yarn but a blend-in. Most modern nylons contain a touch of elastane. It makes them stretchier, more form-fitting and helps them keep their shape over time.

How it feels: Subtle but powerful!
Best for: Hold-ups, comfort waistband tights, shaping styles.

If you're looking for a pair that still fits perfectly hours later: check for elastane in the fabric mix.

Crêpe – Everyday Elegance With Texture

Crêpe stockings are easy to recognize: they have a subtle, finely ribbed surface that gives them a matte, almost powdery look. I especially love wearing them in everyday life because they’re not too shiny, have a pleasant texture, and are sturdy enough to last all day.

How it feels: Dry, textured, slightly rough – but still soft on the skin.
Best for: Daily wear, office outfits, subtle elegance without sparkle.

When I’m in a rush but still want to feel elegant, I almost always reach for crêpe.
